Blue and white dragon bowl, Ming dynasty, Wanli
A blue and white 'Dragon and Phoenix chasing Pearl' Bowl, freely painted from the Wanli period. In the centre of the bowl is a carp in the waves visible, with the bottom marked with a double circle.
Blue and white porcelain is typical of Chinese porcelain that was produced during the Wanli period (1573-1620) of the Ming dynasty. It is characterised by its blue and white colour scheme and intricate designs, which were often inspired by nature or historical events.
One of the key features of Wanli blue and white porcelain is its use of cobalt oxide as the blue pigment. This gives the porcelain a distinctive deep blue color that is highly prized by collectors. The designs on Wanli porcelain were painted onto the piece before it was glazed and fired, a technique known as underglaze blue.
